Mocean created a tool to determine the horizontal response of a wind turbine nacelle, an important aspect when installing blades.
When installing offshore wind turbines, oscillations of the tower may occur. The resulting excursions and accelerations make installation tasks impossible for the personnel at the tower top. This causes lost time due to waiting on weather, especially during blade installation.
On behalf of an offshore contractor, Mocean created a tool to determine the horizontal response of a wind turbine nacelle. Using 2D spectral wave forecasts and the RAOs of horizontal motions of the nacelle from a detailed structural model the motions of the nacelle could be predicted. A further addition was to include the effect of shielding by a vessel.
In the tool, the vessel heading and monopile location can be varied such to gain the most effect of the shielding and reducing the motions of the nacelle to a minimum.
