Vattenfall gives green light for largest offshore wind project in the world

When it is fully operational in 2023, the Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind farm with an installed capacity of 1,500 MW is the largest of its kind in the world. It will then have a sustainable electricity production that corresponds to the annual consumption of more than two million Dutch households.

After winning two subsidy-free tendering rounds in 2018 and 2019, Vattenfall has been granted the permits for the construction of Hollandse Kust Zuid. To optimize the development process, the two projects have been combined into one wind farm.

An important tool to solve climate change is the electrification of transport, heating and industrial processes using fossil-free electricity.

“The Hollandse Kust Zuid project underscores our commitment to providing the Netherlands and Europe with fossil-free electricity. Moreover, the final investment decision shows that despite the Covid-19 pandemic, we are still as determined to enable fossil-free living within one generation,” says Vattenfalls CEO Magnus Hall.

“Hollandse Kust Zuid not only provides our private and business customers with fossil-free and affordable electricity. It is also a large infrastructure investment that creates important economic activity and employment in times of economic uncertainty. Thanks to the good cooperation with our national and international partners, we are well prepared to take the next step in realizing this unique project,” said Gunnar Groebler, Senior Vice President and Head of Business Area Wind at Vattenfall.

Vattenfall works with the following suppliers: Siemens Gamesa, Sif Group, TKF, Prysmian, Subsea 7 and Swire Blue Ocean. Striking: the majority of them are not established in the Netherlands.

The offshore construction on the project is expected to start in 2021.
